How to Manage Restrictions in FLYR

Learn about the different types of restrictions available in FLYR and how you can manage these.

FLYR provides users with the capability to fully manage their restrictions manually whilst also making use of FLYR’s automated inventory optimization. This article intends to provide an overview of the key concepts available in FLYR to manage restrictions as well as providing pointers to other supporting articles for more specific use cases.

In this article you will learn about:

Strategic & Tactical Restrictions - What is the difference?

When we speak about restrictions, we need to differentiate between two key concepts. Both are available to be configured in FLYR:

Strategic Restriction

Also commonly referred to as rate plan definitions, we call these types of restrictions strategic as they are configured once and define the strategy of how you want to sell the selected rate plan(s). Example: you have a rate plan STAY3 offering guests a discount when staying 3 or more nights; this rate plan will thus have a Min LoS 3 by default.

Tactical Restriction

A tactical restriction is to effectively revenue manage specific nights where either you want to restrict low value business or distribute high demand over to low-performing shoulder nights. They override strategic restrictions (only if more restrictive), and you can either set them manually or you can follow FLYR’s recommendations to set tactical restrictions.

Example: Over high demand periods, you might want to restrict further the STAY3 rate plan and apply a min 5, tactically responding to your demand. To learn more about FLYR’s Inventory Optimization, check out this article.

When to use a Strategic & Tactical Restrictions?

When creating a restriction, it is crucial to consider if this is a long-term strategic decision or simply responding tactically to demand. Any restriction that defines a rate plan's baseline behavior should be configured as a strategic restriction. Whereas short-lived and demand-responsive restrictions, often only set for a part of the booking window depending on the nights’ performance, should be configured as tactical restrictions.

Further, it is important to remember that FLYR’s inventory optimization uses tactical restrictions to maximise revenue. During the optimization, FLYR will always account for any configured strategic restrictions for the property and ensure that any recommended tactical restriction won’t modify this restriction unless more restrictive (e.g. the engine wants to close a discount for which you've configured a strategic Min LOS 3).

What restrictions are available to use?

FLYR currently supports three different restriction types, each with three possible options, at two different levels:

Restriction Types

  1. Arrival restrictions

  2. Stay restrictions

  3. Departure restrictions

Restriction Options - can be applied to each chosen restriction type

  • Closed

  • Minimum Length of Stay

  • Maximum Length of Stay

Restriction Levels

  • Bucket

  • Rate Plan

Further, it is important to note that for Strategic Restrictions all restriction types & options are available. However, for Tactical Restrictions only the options Minimum Length of Stay (by either Arrival or Stay) and Closed to Stay are available to use. The type you wish to use for a property can be configured in Settings - Optimization.

How do these restriction types translate to my PMS?

Depending on your PMS capabilities, not all restriction types and options are available. For a full overview of how FLYR and your PMS sync restrictions, please view this article.
